About CG Sub Engineer
The Public Works Department recruits Sub Engineers (junior engineers) through a Vyapam written exam (code PWSE25). The Engineer-in-Chief's advertisement of 23 April 2025 covers 96 Civil and 17 Electrical/Mechanical posts, including backlog posts for divyang candidates. Only local residents of Chhattisgarh can apply.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 20–35 years, counted on 1 January 2025.
Age relaxation
- OBC: 5 years
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- Local residents get a 5-year relaxation on the upper limit of 35, extended from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2028.
- Local women of Chhattisgarh get up to 10 years.
- Government employees can apply up to 38.
- All relaxations together cannot take the age past 45.
Qualification
Sub Engineer (Civil): at least a three-year diploma in Civil Engineering from an institution recognised by the state government, or equivalent engineering qualification. Sub Engineer (Electrical/Mechanical): at least a three-year diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
Other conditions
- A Chhattisgarh domicile certificate issued by the competent authority must be produced at counselling.

What they ask
The Civil paper is 100 purely technical questions in 2 hours, and soil mechanics, structural analysis and concrete design carry 15 marks each. Estimating, building materials and public health engineering carry 5 marks each. The Electrical/Mechanical paper has 65 marks of common questions and 35 marks from your branch. Every wrong answer costs a quarter mark, and there is no general knowledge section.
How to prepare
- Plan study time by the official marks split: soil mechanics, structures and RCC design first for Civil.
- Revise your diploma textbooks and standard formula sheets, since the paper has no GK or reasoning.
- Practise surveying and estimating numericals, which are quick marks if you know the methods.
- Keep your domicile certificate ready before counselling, because only local residents are eligible.
