Typing test in English and Hindi

Type a general knowledge passage for 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes and see your gross and net speed in words per minute, your accuracy and each mistake marked. The Hindi test uses Unicode Devanagari.

India receives most of its rain from the south-west monsoon, which usually reaches the Kerala coast in the first week of June. Moist winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal then move inland, and by July they bring rain to almost the whole country. Farmers time the sowing of kharif crops such as rice, maize and cotton around these rains. A weak monsoon can lower the water in reservoirs and push up food prices, while very heavy rain can flood river plains. The India Meteorological Department issues a forecast for the season every year and updates it as the rains move north.

How to use it

  1. Choose English or Hindi, the test length and a passage.
  2. For Hindi, switch your keyboard to a Hindi layout that types Unicode, such as Inscript. Hindi keyboards on phones work too.
  3. Click the box under the passage and start typing. The timer starts with your first letter.
  4. Fix mistakes with Backspace if you want to. The test ends when the time runs out or you reach the end of the text.

Questions people ask

Every five characters you type, spaces included, count as one word. Gross WPM is those words divided by the minutes taken. Mistakes are counted by word: each word typed differently from the passage is one error, so a missed letter costs that word only. Net WPM takes off one word per minute for each wrong word, and accuracy is the share of your words that match.
