About WBPSC Clerkship

The Clerkship Examination is WBPSC's Madhyamik-level exam for Lower Division Assistant and Lower Division Clerk posts across state government offices, including the Secretariat and district offices. It has an objective Part I, a short descriptive Part II and then a computer and typing test. Vacancies are announced after the advertisement, not in it.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: 18–40 years, counted on 1 January 2023.

Age relaxation

• SC: 5 years
• ST: 5 years
• OBC: 3 years
• Persons with benchmark disabilities: upper limit up to 45 years
• Ex-servicemen: military service is deducted from actual age as per the advertisement's formula
• No relaxation for reserved-category candidates of other states

Qualification

Madhyamik pass (WBBSE) or equivalent, plus elementary computer knowledge with typing speed of 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali.

Other conditions

• You must read, write and speak Bengali unless your mother tongue is Nepali; others are tested in Bengali along with the typing test.
• You choose English or Bengali typing when you apply.

Selection process

1. Part I: objective exam (100 marks)
2. Part II: descriptive English and regional language papers (50 marks each)
3. Computer operation and typing test for those who qualify in Parts I and II

WBPSC Clerkship syllabus

What they ask

Part I has 100 one-mark questions in 90 minutes, and each wrong answer costs 0.25 mark. General Studies stays at an everyday level: basic science, current events and elementary Indian history and geography. The arithmetic list is school-level, from fractions and HCF-LCM to time and distance and area of rectangles. Part II is short: report drafting, precis and translation in English and in your chosen regional language.

How to prepare

• Finish the arithmetic list first (fractions, HCF-LCM, percentage, profit and loss, time and distance); it is fixed and carries 30 marks.
• Keep a daily current events notebook for General Studies, which is the largest Part I section at 40 marks.
• Practise one report, one precis and one translation each week for Part II.
• Start typing practice early to reach 20 words per minute in English or 10 in Bengali, since the typing test comes only after Parts I and II.
• Use daily topic-wise practice quizzes on the free Improvam app for English and arithmetic drills.
