About WBCS
WBCS (Exe.) etc. is WBPSC's combined exam for the state's administrative and allied services. The posts are grouped as A, B, C and D, and one application lets you compete for more than one group. Group B is the West Bengal Police Service. From the 2025 exam, the preliminary stage has two General Studies papers and the main exam has six merit papers plus an optional subject for Groups A and B.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 21–36 years, counted on 1 January of the examination year.
Age relaxation
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- The 21 to 36 range is for Group A and C services
- West Bengal Police Service (Group B): 20 to 36 years
- Group D services: 21 to 39 years
- OBC relaxation applies to non-creamy layer OBC candidates of West Bengal
- Persons with benchmark disabilities (40% and above): upper limit up to 45 years
- SC, ST and OBC candidates of other states are considered for unreserved posts only
Qualification
A degree from a recognised university, plus the ability to read, write and speak Bengali (not required if your mother tongue is Nepali).
Other conditions
- West Bengal Police Service candidates need a minimum height of 1.65 m (men) or 1.50 m (women), with relaxation for some communities.
- Candidates whose mother tongue is not Bengali or Nepali have their Bengali tested at the personality test.

What they ask
Prelims GS Paper I gives 40 marks each to environment and ecology and to polity and economy, and West Bengal geography has its own slot. GS Paper II tests aptitude and only needs 33%, but you must sit both prelims papers or you are disqualified. The main exam is entirely written answers, and Paper II on Tradition and Culture of Bengal asks about the Bengal School of Art, painters such as Abanindranath Tagore and Jamini Roy, folk forms, literature and architecture. Your merit papers are checked only if you score 30% in each of the Bengali/Nepali and English qualifying papers.
How to prepare
- Plan GS Paper I by the marks table: environment and ecology plus polity and economy together carry 80 of the 200 marks.
- Practise GS Paper II comprehension and Class X data interpretation; it is only qualifying, but failing it ends your attempt.
- Start Tradition and Culture of Bengal early, because Bengal School of Art, folk art, Bengali literature and architecture are not covered in standard GS books.
- Write one precis, one letter and one translation a week so the 300-mark Bengali/Nepali and English qualifying papers do not block your merit papers.

Under the 2024 advertisement, 21 to 36 years on 1 January of the exam year for Groups A and C, 20 to 36 for Group B (WBPS) and 21 to 39 for Group D. SC and ST candidates get 5 extra years and West Bengal OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates get 3.
