About Puducherry Police SI

Sub-Inspector of Police is a Group B non-gazetted post at pay level 6 in the Puducherry Police. The notification dated 12 August 2025 listed 70 posts, with 33% horizontal reservation for women, and reopened a recruitment first notified on 8 November 2022. Candidates who applied in 2022 did not need to apply again, and their age and other eligibility are judged by the 2022 cut-off. The written test for this round was held on 22 February 2026 and the result is on the portal.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: 20–27 years, counted on 12 September 2025 for new applicants (2022 applicants are judged by the 2022 notification).

Age relaxation

• OBC: 3 years
• SC: 5 years
• The 3 years for backward classes covers OBC, MBC, BCM and EBC candidates.
• Ex-servicemen get their period of military service plus 3 years.
• Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Head Constables and Police Constables of the Puducherry Police can apply as in-service candidates up to 32 years (35 for OBC/MBC/EBC/BCM, 37 for SC).

Qualification

A degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification.

Other conditions

• You must be a native of the UT of Puducherry and have lived there continuously for the 5 years before the notification date.
• Physical standards are the same as for constables: men at least 165 cm tall with chest 81-86 cm and 5 cm expansion and BMI 18.5 to 29.9; women at least 154 cm and 45 kg.
• Physical endurance test for men: 100 m in 15 seconds, long jump 3.80 m, high jump 1.20 m, 800 m in 2 minutes 50 seconds.
• Physical endurance test for women: 100 m in 16.5 seconds, long jump 3.25 m, high jump 1.05 m, 200 m in 36 seconds.
• Ex-servicemen who were commissioned officers, including ECOs and SSCOs, do not take the endurance test once they clear the physical standard test.
• Selected candidates serve two years' probation, which includes one year of basic training.

3. Written test of 200 marks at graduation level: Paper I and Paper II of 100 marks each
4. Merit list on written marks, with a minimum in each paper of 30% (unreserved), 25% (MBC/OBC/EBC/BCM/EWS) and 20% (SC)

What they ask

The SI papers follow the constable layout but are set at graduation level. Paper I adds a section on ethics and morality and asks English literature along with grammar. Paper II has more polity and current India than the constable paper: governance, environmental science and developments in contemporary India sit next to physics, chemistry and maths. Both papers have 100 one-mark questions in two hours, with 0.25 marks cut for a wrong answer, printed in English plus Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam.

How to prepare

• Build up for the 800 m (men) or 200 m (women) run early. The endurance test comes before the written test and every event must be cleared.
• Prepare polity as a full subject. Paper I has a general studies section, and Paper II lists it again as polity and civics, the Constitution, and polity and governance.
• Set aside time for ethics and morality, a Paper I section the constable paper does not have. Practise judgement questions on situations a police officer faces.
• Clear the minimum in each paper separately (30% for unreserved candidates). A strong Paper II will not cover a weak Paper I.
