About Meghalaya Police AB Constable

The AB (armed branch) category is the largest block in Meghalaya Police recruitment and needs only a Class IX pass. The 6 March 2024 advertisement listed 1,637 AB posts: 1,494 Armed Branch, Battalion, MPRO GD and Handyman Constables, and 143 Driver Constables. Pay is Level 4 (Rs 22,200 to 52,400) for candidates who have passed Class X and Level 3 (Rs 20,600 to 48,700) for those who have passed only Class IX.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: 18–21 years, counted on 1 January 2024.

Age relaxation

  • SC: 5 years
  • ST: 5 years
  • ST, OST (other Scheduled Tribes) and SC candidates get 5 years on the upper limit.
  • Candidates who use the age or height relaxation for ST/SC/OST cannot claim an open-category seat.

Qualification

Class IX passed. Driver Constable applicants also need an HMV or LMV driving licence.

Other conditions

  • Height: men 162 cm (open) or 157 cm (ST/SC, including other Scheduled Tribes of Meghalaya); women 157 cm (open) or 152 cm (ST/SC). Weight and chest are not measured.
  • Driver Constable is for men only. 10% of vacancies are reserved for women on the other posts.
  • State reservation: 40% Khasi-Jaintia, 40% Garo, 5% other tribes of Meghalaya and SC, 15% open.
  • Knock knees, flat foot, squint, poor eyesight, colour blindness, varicose veins or piles disqualify at the medical.

What they ask

The AB written test is a single objective paper on an OMR sheet: elementary English, basic arithmetic and basic general awareness, 150 marks in 60 minutes. The advertisement does not split the marks by subject. A few questions, worth no more than 5% of the marks, may be set in Khasi and Garo. The run is worth more than the paper here: 250 of the 450 marks come from the PET.

How to prepare

  • Put the run first. Men who finish 5 km in 19 minutes or less get the full 250 PET marks, and each extra minute costs 25 marks; slower than 24 minutes means you are out. For women the 3 km limits are 14 and 19 minutes.
  • Only the top 20 candidates per vacancy in each category after the PET reach the written test, so a strong run time is also your ticket to the exam.
  • Revise Class IX to X level English, arithmetic and general awareness. The paper is 150 marks in 60 minutes, so practise with a timer.
  • For Driver Constable, keep your HMV or LMV licence valid and practise driving; the trade test is qualifying.
  • Claim bonus marks in the application if you are a Home Guard volunteer, hold an NCC 'B' or 'C' certificate or have represented the state in sport at National level.

How to apply

  1. Apply online on megpolice.gov.in when the CRB opens applications. In 2024 the form was due to open on 1 April, but a CRB notice moved the opening to 8 April and the closing date to 31 May 2024.
  2. Register once with a valid mobile number and email. You can apply for several AB posts, paying Rs 150 for each; all AB posts you apply for share one PET and one written test.
  3. Choose one recruitment centre (1st to 5th MLP Battalion). Appearing at more than one venue cancels your candidature.
