About MTET
MTET is the eligibility test for teaching Classes I to VIII in Meghalaya schools covered by the RTE Act, which includes government, aided and private unaided schools. The Education Department conducts it through the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), Shillong. Passing it makes you eligible for appointment but does not give you a job, and the certificate is valid for life. The 2026 test was held on 24 July 2026, after being postponed from its tentative May date, and DERT declared the results on 3 September 2026.

Age relaxation
- There is no age limit for MTET.
Qualification
Paper I (Classes I-V): Higher Secondary with at least 50% (45% under the NCTE 2002 recognition regulations) plus a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, or other routes in the handbook such as HS with 50% plus a 4-year B.El.Ed, or graduation plus a D.El.Ed. Paper II (Classes VI-VIII): graduation plus a D.El.Ed, or at least 50% in graduation or post-graduation plus a B.Ed, among other routes. Students pursuing an NCTE or RCI recognised teacher education course can apply, and all in-service teachers teaching in the state are eligible.
Other conditions
- Only citizens of India who are permanent residents of Meghalaya can apply.
- SC, ST and OST candidates of Meghalaya and PwD candidates get up to 5% relaxation in the marks required in the minimum qualification.
- Only NCTE-recognised teacher education courses count; D.Ed and B.Ed (Special Education) must be RCI-recognised.

What they ask
Every MTET question is a one-mark MCQ with no negative marking, and each paper has 150 questions in two and a half hours. Child Development and Pedagogy questions deal with the psychology of learners aged 6 to 11 (Paper I) or 11 to 14 (Paper II). Mathematics, EVS, Science and Social Science questions test content and how to teach it, based on the state syllabus for those classes but at a difficulty that can reach the Secondary stage (Paper I) or Senior Secondary stage (Paper II). The medium is English, except for the language sections.
How to prepare
- Aim for 90 of 150 (60%); SC, ST and OST candidates of Meghalaya and PwD candidates need 68. There is no negative marking, so answer every question.
- Child Development and Pedagogy is 30 questions in both papers. The DERT handbook names Piaget, Kohlberg, gender socialisation, inclusive education and school-based assessment, so study each of these by name.
- Choose Language I carefully in the form. Paper I offers Khasi, Garo, Assamese, Bengali, Hindi and Nepali; Paper II adds Urdu and Mizo. English is compulsory as Language II.
- Download the MTET guidebooks for Paper I and Paper II from the DERT notice board (posted in July 2026) and work through them alongside the handbook syllabus.

How to apply
- Apply online on megeducation.gov.in or dert.megeducation.gov.in during the application window announced by DERT (the MTET 2026 form opened on 23 March 2026).
- Fill a separate application for Paper I and Paper II if you want both.
- Upload a recent colour photograph and your signature, then pay the fee: Rs 1,000 per paper (Rs 500 for SC/ST/OST of Meghalaya), or Rs 2,000 for both papers (Rs 1,000 reserved). PwD candidates are exempt.
- Download the admit card from megeducation.gov.in; report problems to your Officer-in-Charge at least 5 days before the test.
