About JKPSC Civil Judge
JKPSC recruits Civil Judges (Junior Division) for the subordinate judiciary of Jammu and Kashmir through the J&K Civil Service (Judicial) Competitive Examination. The 2025 cycle was notified as Notification No. 07-PSC(DR-P) of 2025, dated 14 May 2025. A JKPSC notice of 10 June 2025 set out the prelim and main syllabus, which lists the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam alongside civil laws and J&K service rules.
Eligibility
Qualification
A Bachelor of Laws from a university established by law in India, or an equivalent law degree recognised by the Government of India. This is the rule in JKPSC's 2019 notification; confirm it in the 2025 notification before you apply.
Other conditions
- For the 2025 cycle, JKPSC kept 18 June 2025 as the cut-off date for eligibility, even after extending the online form deadline to 5 July 2025.
- The 2025 syllabus notice attaches medical examination regulations, including minimum vision standards.

What they ask
The prelim has two papers of 225 marks and two hours each, and under the 2019 scheme its marks only decide who reaches the main exam. Paper A mixes general knowledge with constitutional law, the three 2023 criminal laws and the Limitation Act. Paper B is about procedure and service rules: the Code of Civil Procedure, the General Financial Rules, the J&K Service Regulations and the rules for subordinate courts. The main exam has six compulsory papers plus optional papers, each of 100 marks and three hours, and Paper I tests English essay, precis and translation into Urdu or Hindi.
How to prepare
- Study the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam section by section. The 2025 syllabus lists them in both prelim Paper A and main Paper III.
- Cover the J&K-specific material most law courses skip: the J&K Service Regulations, 1956 (chapters III to XIII, XXII and XXIII), the J&K Residential and Commercial Tenancy Act, 2012 and the High Court's circular orders for subordinate courts.
- Write timed English essays, precis and English-Urdu or English-Hindi translations, since main Paper I tests all three.
- Choose optional papers that match what you studied well in your LLB, such as Contract Act and torts, or Hindu and Muhammadan law.
