About Assam Judicial Service
The Gauhati High Court recruits entry-level judicial officers for Assam through direct recruitment to Grade-III of the Assam Judicial Service. The advertisement dated 7 February 2025 was for 22 posts: 12 unreserved, 1 SC, 2 ST(P) and 7 ST(H). You need a law degree. Selection has a screening prelims, a main written exam with a qualifying Assamese paper, and a viva-voce.

- In the 2025 cycle only locomotor-disabled PwBD candidates could claim PwBD benefits, and no post was reserved for PwBD.
- A person who has married while having a living spouse, or married someone with a living spouse, is not eligible.

What they ask
The prelims is a 100-mark objective test: 90 marks on general knowledge, aptitude, English and the main civil and criminal laws, and 10 marks on Assamese. You need 60% to clear it. The main exam has English (essay, precis and grammar), General Knowledge with an aptitude test, and two law papers, plus a 50-mark Assamese paper that needs 35%. The 2025 syllabus lists both the old and new criminal laws: IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act appear next to BNS, BNSS and BSA.
How to prepare
- Study IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act alongside BNS, BNSS and BSA, since the 2025 syllabus names both sets.
- Aim well above the 60% prelims cut-off, because only 10 candidates per post move on to the main exam.
- Do not neglect Assamese: it gives 10 prelims marks, and the 50-mark mains language paper needs 35% to pass.
- Write timed essays and precis for Paper I. English is a full 100-mark paper and every paper needs at least 45%.
- Prepare for the viva as a scored round, since you need 60% of its 50 marks.
