About Haryana Civil Judge (HCS JB)
Civil Judges (Junior Division) in Haryana are selected through the HCS (Judicial Branch) exam, which HPSC conducts for a selection committee notified by the state government. The latest advertisement we found, No. 1/2024 dated 1 January 2024, was for 174 posts (129 existing and 45 anticipated). The exam has a prelims, five descriptive mains papers and a viva-voce.

What they ask
The prelims has 125 questions in 2 hours, each worth 4 marks, with 0.8 marks cut for a wrong answer. Questions come from the mains law syllabus plus current events, at law-graduate level, and you need 150 marks (100 for reserved categories other than EWS) to reach the mains; prelims marks do not count later. The mains has three law papers of 200 marks each, an English paper of 200 marks with a long essay, and a matric-standard Hindi paper of 100 marks. You need 33 percent in each paper, and 50 percent in aggregate to be called for the viva-voce (45 percent for SC, ST, Backward Class, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, but not EWS).
How to prepare
- Read the bare acts named in the syllabus, including the Punjab Courts Act and the Haryana rent law, which are state-specific.
- Be selective in the prelims. With 0.8 marks lost per wrong answer, a blind guess costs a fifth of a correct answer.
- Practise the 1,000-word English essay under time; it alone carries 100 marks in the mains.
- Do not neglect Hindi. It is a matric-level paper, but a score under 33 percent in any paper counts for nothing.
