About Chandigarh Police Constable

Chandigarh Police recruits Constables (Executive) directly into its executive cadre, which includes the India Reserve Battalion. It is a Group C post at pay level 3 of the 7th CPC. The latest general notice, published on 20 May 2023, advertised 700 temporary posts: 393 for men, 223 for women and 84 for ex-servicemen, with 23 backlog vacancies counted in.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: 18–25 years, counted on 20 May 2023 (the date of the advertisement).

Age relaxation

  • OBC: 3 years
  • SC: 5 years
  • The upper limit is 28 for OBC and 30 for SC candidates.
  • Ex-servicemen, and under the corrigendum wives of ex-servicemen, can apply up to 45 years of age.
  • Chandigarh Home Guard volunteers on the rolls for at least 2 continuous years get 1 year of relaxation for each year of service, from 2 up to 7 years.
  • Wards of serving or retired Chandigarh Police employees get 2 years; wards of employees who died in service get 3 years.
  • Departmental candidates of Chandigarh Police can apply up to 40 years.

Other conditions

  • Height: men 170 cm, women 157.5 cm. Men's chest: 84 cm unexpanded and 88 cm expanded. Residents of notified hill areas and wards of police personnel get 5 cm off (wards can use either the height or the chest relaxation, not both).
  • Physical test for ages 18 to 30: men run 1600 m in 6 minutes 15 seconds, women run 800 m in 4 minutes 15 seconds. Long jump 3.95 m (men) or 2.74 m (women) and high jump 1.14 m (men) or 0.90 m (women), three attempts each. Older age bands (up to 45) get more time and lower marks.
  • Every candidate takes a dope test during the PE&MT.
  • OBC reservation counts only castes on the OBC list issued for Chandigarh.

What they ask

The 2023 paper had 100 one-mark questions in 105 minutes, and the three subjects were mixed together rather than kept in blocks. In Set A, the first four questions went from the venue of the Advantage Healthcare India 2023 conference, to a sum where the maths signs are swapped, to a division-with-remainder word problem, and then to India's highest civilian award. Current affairs came from news of the exam year, while static general knowledge stayed at a basic level. You get the paper only in the language you picked in the form (Hindi, English or Punjabi), and you cannot switch later.

How to prepare

  • Keep dated notes of national news for the year of your exam. The 2023 paper opened with a question on a conference held that same year.
  • Practise mixed sets instead of one subject at a time, because the 2023 paper switched between general knowledge, reasoning and arithmetic from one question to the next.
  • Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks and the cut-off (40% for General, 35% for SC and OBC) is checked before bonus marks are added, so do not count on NCC or height bonus to get you past it.
  • Men should get a licence for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers before the form opens, and start 1600 m runs early: the limit for men aged 18 to 30 is 6 minutes 15 seconds.
