About ITBP Constable Driver
ITBP hires its own constable drivers, a Group C post at Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700 to 69,100) with a posting liability anywhere in India or abroad. The latest advertisement, with applications open from 8 October to 6 November 2024, listed 545 vacancies for men only, and a corrigendum of 28 August 2025 raised this to 712. Vacancies are filled on an all-India basis by category, and 10% are kept for ex-servicemen. You need a heavy vehicle licence before you apply, and selection moves through a physical test, a written paper, document checks, a driving test and a medical.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 21–27 years, counted on 6 November 2024.
Age relaxation
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- Age is counted on the closing date: you must be born between 7 November 1997 and 6 November 2003.
- Ex-servicemen: 3 years (General), 6 years (OBC) or 8 years (SC/ST) after deducting military service from actual age.
- Central Government employees with at least 3 years of regular service: up to 40 years (UR/EWS), 43 (OBC) and 45 (SC/ST).
- Children and dependants of those killed in the 1984 riots or the 2002 Gujarat riots: 5 years (UR/EWS), 8 years (OBC) and 10 years (SC/ST).

Other conditions
- Open to male Indian citizens, and also to subjects of Nepal and Bhutan.
- Vacancies are not split by state. A domicile certificate, PAN, Aadhaar, driving licence or voter card is checked only to confirm citizenship.
- Height 170 cm with chest 80 cm unexpanded and 85 cm expanded for most candidates. Lower limits apply to Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Gorkhas, Dogras, Marathas, candidates from Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Ladakh, North-East candidates and ST candidates.
- No glasses or lenses are allowed for distance vision. The eyesight table in the advertisement puts both eyes at 6/6, while its text mentions 6/9 for the weaker eye, so read the medical standard in the advertisement itself. Colour-blind candidates are not eligible.
- Fee is Rs 100 for General, OBC and EWS candidates, paid online. SC, ST and ex-servicemen are exempt.

- Straight driving with gear changes, and shifting down from top gear in traffic
- Uphill and downhill driving, stopping and restarting on a slope without rolling back
- Overtaking, giving pass, lane changes and lane driving
- Hand and electric signals, emergency stops and safety
- Reversing, garaging on and off side, and turning in tight spaces
- Courtesy to pedestrians, cyclists and other road users
- Mandatory, warning and informatory road signs
- A driver's duty in case of an accident
- Basic motor mechanism and fixing minor defects
What they ask
The written paper has 100 questions in 2 hours, and 60 of them test motor transport trade theory, so a driver's working knowledge counts for more than general studies here. The rest is 10 general knowledge, 20 Hindi or English and 10 maths questions, all at Class 10 standard. You need 35% to qualify as General, EWS or ex-serviceman and 33% as SC, ST or OBC. The final merit list is drawn only from written test marks, category by category, so the driving test and physical stages have to be cleared but do not add to your score.
How to prepare
- Give most of your time to motor transport theory. It carries 60 of the 100 marks and merit is decided by written marks alone.
- Learn the three kinds of road signs (mandatory, warning and informatory) and a driver's duties after an accident, since the skill test marks both.
- Practise the race well before the call letter comes. The 1.6 km must be done in 7 minutes 30 seconds, and there is no appeal if you fail any PET event.
- Check your eyesight early. Distance vision is tested without glasses or lenses, and colour blindness means rejection.

How to apply
- Register and apply online on recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. No other mode is accepted.
- Fill in your category, employment status and other profile details carefully, since they cannot be changed later.
- Pay the Rs 100 fee online if you are not exempt.
- Download the admit card for each stage from the ITBP recruitment website and carry a printout of your application form to the PET venue.
