About IB SA MT
Security Assistant (Motor Transport) is the Intelligence Bureau's driver post, filled in its Subsidiary Intelligence Bureaux at Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700 to 69,100) plus a special security allowance of 20% of basic pay. The 2025 exam advertised 455 vacancies. Besides Class 10, you need a car driving licence, a year of driving experience, basic motor mechanism skills and a domicile certificate of the state you apply for.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–27 years, counted on 28 September 2025.
Age relaxation
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- Central Government civilian employees with 3 years of regular service: up to 40 years.
- Widows, divorced women and judicially separated women who have not remarried: up to 35 years (general), 38 (OBC) and 40 (SC/ST).
- Ex-servicemen: as per Government rules.
- Meritorious sportspersons: up to 5 years.

Other conditions
- The post is not identified as suitable for PwBD candidates.
- The driving experience certificate must come from a government department, PSU, autonomous body, registered firm, local body or similar employer, in the format given in Appendix-6 of the advertisement.
- Male unreserved, EWS and OBC candidates pay Rs 650 (Rs 100 exam fee plus Rs 550 processing charges). Others pay the Rs 550 processing charges.

What they ask
Tier-I has 100 one-mark questions in an hour, and one of its five 20-mark parts is on basic transport and driving rules. The minimum Tier-I marks are 30 for unreserved and EWS, 28 for OBC and 25 for SC and ST, and about ten times the vacancies are called to Tier-II. In Tier-II you drive as the instructor tells you and answer practical questions on the vehicle, its upkeep and small repairs. You need 20 out of 50 in Tier-II, and the final list is made on Tier-I and Tier-II marks together.
How to prepare
- Learn road signs, traffic rules and basic transport rules well. That part alone is worth 20 marks in Tier-I.
- Practise small repairs you may be asked to do in Tier-II, such as spotting a fault and fixing a minor snag, and be ready to explain routine maintenance.
- Get your driving experience certificate in the Appendix-6 format early, because one year of driving experience is an essential qualification.

- Open the SA/MT application link posted on mha.gov.in (or the NCS portal) when the exam is advertised.
- Pick the SIB of the state whose domicile certificate you hold.
- Upload your photo and signature and pay the fee and processing charges.
