About IB Security Assistant
Security Assistant/Executive is a Group C post in the Intelligence Bureau's Subsidiary Intelligence Bureaux (SIBs), at Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700 to 69,100) plus a special security allowance of 20% of basic pay. The 2025 exam had 4,987 vacancies across 37 SIBs, with the largest share in Delhi (1,124). Each SIB lists the local languages or dialects it needs, and you apply against the SIB of the state whose domicile you hold.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–27 years, counted on 17 August 2025.
Age relaxation
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- Central Government civilian employees with 3 years of regular service: up to 40 years.
- Widows, divorced women and judicially separated women who have not remarried: up to 35 years (unreserved), 38 (OBC) and 40 (SC/ST).
- Ex-servicemen: as per Government rules.
- Meritorious sportspersons: up to 5 years.

Other conditions
- Ex-servicemen vacancies are pooled centrally, so ex-servicemen from all SIBs compete for them.
- The post is not identified as suitable for PwBD candidates.
- The job carries all-India transfer liability.
- All candidates pay Rs 550 processing charges. Male unreserved, EWS and OBC candidates also pay the Rs 100 exam fee; SC, ST, women and eligible ex-servicemen do not.

What they ask
Tier-I has 100 one-mark questions in an hour, 20 each from general awareness, quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English and general studies. The minimum Tier-I marks are 30 for unreserved and EWS, 28 for OBC and 25 for SC and ST. Tier-II asks you to translate a 500-word passage between your chosen local language and English in both directions, and you need 20 out of 50 to pass. Interview calls go out at five times the vacancies based on Tier-I marks, and the final list is made on Tier-I plus the interview.
How to prepare
- Apply for the SIB whose listed language you can read and write comfortably, because Tier-II is a translation test in that language.
- Translate a short news item from your local language into English and back every day, and time yourself against the one-hour limit.
- Aim well above the Tier-I cut-off. Tier-I marks decide who gets an interview call and count in the final merit list.
- Leave a question blank rather than guess wildly. A quarter mark goes for each wrong answer.

- Open the SA/Exe application link posted on mha.gov.in (or the NCS portal) when the exam is advertised.
- Pick the SIB of the state whose domicile certificate you hold, and the language you know.
- Upload your photo and signature and pay the fee and processing charges.
- Keep your domicile certificate ready, since it is an essential qualification for this post.
