About IB MTS

The Intelligence Bureau hires Multi-Tasking Staff (General) for its Subsidiary Intelligence Bureaux as Group C non-gazetted staff at Pay Level 1 (Rs 18,000 to 56,900), plus a special security allowance of 20% of basic pay. The 2025 exam advertised 362 vacancies. You need Class 10 and a domicile certificate of the state you apply for.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: 18–25 years, counted on 14 December 2025.

Age relaxation

• SC: 5 years
• ST: 5 years
• OBC: 3 years
• PwBD: 10 years
• PwBD: 10 years (unreserved), 13 years (OBC) and 15 years (SC/ST).
• Central Government civilian employees with 3 years of regular service: up to 40 years.
• Widows, divorced women and judicially separated women who have not remarried: up to 35 years (unreserved), 38 (OBC) and 40 (SC/ST).
• Ex-servicemen: as per Government rules.
• Meritorious sportspersons: up to 5 years.

Qualification

Matriculation or equivalent from a recognised board, with the result out by 14 December 2025, and a domicile certificate of the state you apply for, held on that date.

Other conditions

• Unlike the SA posts, MTS (General) is open to PwBD candidates in the disability categories listed in the advertisement.
• The job carries all-India transfer liability.
• All candidates pay Rs 550 processing charges. Male unreserved, EWS and OBC candidates also pay the Rs 100 exam fee; SC, ST, women, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen do not.

Selection process

1. Tier-I: online objective exam, 100 marks, 1 hour
2. Tier-II: descriptive English test, 50 marks, 1 hour (qualifying, 20 out of 50)
3. Final merit on Tier-I marks
4. Character and antecedent verification, then medical examination

What they ask

Tier-I has 100 one-mark questions in an hour, and general awareness alone carries 40 of them. The rest are 20 each from quantitative aptitude, reasoning and English. The minimum Tier-I marks are 30 for unreserved and EWS, 28 for OBC and 25 for SC and ST, and about ten times the vacancies are called to Tier-II. Tier-II is a written English test on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and a 150-word paragraph, where you need 20 out of 50. The final list goes by Tier-I marks alone.

How to prepare

• Give general awareness the most time. It is 40% of Tier-I, and Tier-I alone decides the final merit list.
• Write one 150-word paragraph a day on a simple topic and check your grammar, since Tier-II needs 20 out of 50.
• Do not guess blindly in Tier-I. A quarter mark is cut for each wrong answer.
• Use daily topic-wise practice quizzes on the free Improvam app for general awareness and reasoning.

How to apply

1. Open the MTS (General) application link posted on mha.gov.in (or the NCS portal) when the exam is advertised.
2. Pick the SIB of the state whose domicile certificate you hold.
3. Upload your photo and signature and pay the fee and processing charges.

• Photo: Recent colour passport-size photo, JPG/JPEG, 100 to 200 KB.
• Signature: JPG/JPEG, 80 to 150 KB.
