About SSC GD Constable
SSC GD Constable fills General Duty constable posts in the Central Armed Police Forces, the Secretariat Security Force and Assam Rifles, under a recruitment scheme set by the Ministry of Home Affairs. SSC runs the computer based exam, and the forces conduct the physical and medical tests. The 2026 notice listed 25,487 tentative vacancies (23,467 for men and 2,020 for women), divided state and UT-wise.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–23 years, counted on 1 January 2026.
Age relaxation
- OBC: 3 years
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- Ex-servicemen get 3 years after deducting their military service from their actual age.
- Children and dependants of victims killed in the 1984 riots get 5 years (8 for OBC, 10 for SC/ST).
Qualification
Matriculation or Class 10 pass from a recognised board or university by 1 January 2026.
Other conditions
- Vacancies are fixed state and UT-wise, so you must produce a domicile or permanent residence certificate of the state or UT you chose in the form at the medical and document stage. A certificate from a different state leads to cancellation.
- Physical Efficiency Test: men run 5 km in 24 minutes and women 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes (Ladakh region: 1.6 km in 7 minutes for men, 800 metres in 5 minutes for women).
- Minimum height is 170 cm for men and 157 cm for women, with lower limits for some groups listed in the notice.
- NCC certificate holders get bonus marks: 5% of the maximum marks for a C certificate, 3% for B and 2% for A.
- Fee is Rs 100. Women, SC, ST and eligible ex-servicemen candidates do not pay.

What they ask
The computer based exam has 80 questions of 2 marks each in 60 minutes, with 0.25 mark cut for a wrong answer. Questions are at Matriculation level. You can take the paper in English, Hindi or one of 13 regional languages, and the fourth section tests either basic English or basic Hindi. Reasoning is mainly non-verbal, and general knowledge covers sports, polity and the Constitution along with history and geography.
How to prepare
- Build speed on elementary maths and reasoning. The paper gives you 60 minutes for 80 questions, so time spent stuck on one question costs you others.
- A wrong answer costs 0.25 against 2 marks for a right one, so an answer you can narrow down to two options is usually worth marking.
- Start running practice early. Outside the Ladakh region, men must finish 5 km in 24 minutes and women 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes.
- Get your domicile certificate for the state you will choose in the form before you apply, since a mismatch cancels your candidature.
