About Kerala High Court Assistant
The High Court of Kerala recruits its own Assistants through its recruitment portal, not through Kerala PSC. The last direct recruitment (Rec. Nos. 4 and 5/2024) listed 41 anticipated general vacancies and 4 backlog vacancies for differently abled candidates, on a pay scale of ₹39,300–83,000. Selection uses an objective test, a descriptive test and an interview.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–36 years, counted on 1 January 2024.
Age relaxation
- OBC: 3 years
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- Widows get up to 5 years and some differently abled categories up to 15 years, with the upper limit capped at 50.
- High Court staff in lower pay scales could apply if born on or after 2 January 1984.
Qualification
A bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks, or a master's degree, or a law degree, awarded or recognised by a university in Kerala. SC/ST candidates are exempt from the 50% condition. Computer knowledge is desirable.
Other conditions
- Open to Indian citizens. Degrees from universities outside Kerala need a recognition certificate from a Kerala university.
- The 2024 application fee was ₹500, with exemptions for the categories named in the notification.

Objective test
- General English (50 marks)
- General knowledge (40 marks): facts about India and Kerala, the Constitution of India, general science and information technology, current affairs
- Basic mathematics and reasoning (10 marks)

What they ask
Half the objective paper is General English, and each wrong answer costs a quarter mark. The descriptive paper follows immediately and is only evaluated for candidates who make the interview shortlist, which needs at least 40% in the objective test. The interview needs 35% for the ranked list. Final rank adds objective, descriptive and interview marks.
How to prepare
- Build your English first. It decides 50 of the 100 objective marks and the whole 60-mark descriptive paper.
- Practise precis and short essays against the clock, since you get 60 minutes right after the 75-minute objective test.
- Answer only when you can rule out options, because every wrong answer costs 0.25 marks.
- Aim well above the 40% objective cut-off for the shortlist; the High Court can raise the shortlist bar when too many candidates qualify.

The 2024 notification took candidates born between 2 January 1988 and 1 January 2006. SC/ST candidates could be born from 2 January 1983 and OBC candidates from 2 January 1985.
