About JTET
JTET is the eligibility test you must pass before applying for Sahayak Acharya (assistant teacher) posts in Jharkhand's elementary schools. The Jharkhand Academic Council conducts it under the Jharkhand Teacher Eligibility Test Rules, 2026, notified by the School Education and Literacy Department on 26 March 2026. There are two levels, one for Classes 1 to 5 and one for Classes 6 to 8, and you may take both. Passing gives you a certificate, not a job.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: At least 21 years, counted on 1 August of the year the test is held.
Age relaxation
- The upper age limit follows the Jharkhand government's limit for state service.
- Para teachers (Sahayak Adhyapak) under the Jharkhand Education Project Council with at least two years of continuous service get relaxation equal to their contract service, up to age 58.
- All candidates get a one-time relaxation equal to the gap since the last JTET minus one year.
Qualification

Other conditions
- SC, ST, PVTG, BC-1, BC-2 and disabled candidates get 5% relaxation in the minimum marks of the qualifying course.
- Candidates who are still taking a teacher training course may sit JTET, but must submit the final marksheet by the date the exam authority sets.
- You may take JTET again to improve your score.

JTET syllabus
Level 1
- Child development and pedagogy
- Language I: two of Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and English (Urdu is compulsory for Urdu posts)
- Language II: one regional or tribal language from Schedule 1 of the Rules
- Mathematics and environmental studies at Class 1 to 5 content, set at matric difficulty
Level 2
- Child development and pedagogy
- Language I and Language II as in Level 1
- Maths and science teachers: maths and science (50) plus computer basics (10)
- Social science teachers: social studies (50) plus computer basics (10); language teachers pick either stream
- Content from the Class 6 to 8 syllabus, set at Class 12 difficulty
What they ask
Each level is one paper of 150 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each, in 2 hours 30 minutes, with no negative marking. Level 1 questions follow the Class 1 to 5 syllabus at matric difficulty, and Level 2 follows Classes 6 to 8 at Class 12 difficulty. Language II must be one of Jharkhand's regional or tribal languages listed in the Rules. To pass you need 60% if you are General or EWS, 55% for BC-1 and BC-2, and 52% for SC, ST, PVTG and disabled candidates.
How to prepare
- Decide your level, and for Level 2 your stream (maths-science or social studies), before you apply, since the optional section is 60 of the 150 questions.
- Child development and pedagogy has 30 questions in both levels, so one round of preparation serves both papers.
- Choose Language II early. It must be a regional or tribal language from Schedule 1 of the Rules and carries as many questions as Language I.
- There is no negative marking, so answer every question.
- For Level 2, do not skip the 10 computer basics questions; they appear in both streams.
