About GPSC Class 1-2

This is GPSC's combined exam for gazetted Class 1 and Class 2 posts in the Gujarat government, including the Gujarat Administrative Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Municipal Chief Officer. One prelim, one main exam and one interview decide selection for every post in the advertisement. The list of posts changes with each advertisement, so read the post table in the detailed advertisement before you apply.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: 20–35 years, counted on 16 April 2026.

Age relaxation

  • OBC: 5 years
  • SC: 5 years
  • ST: 5 years
  • EWS: 5 years
  • PwBD: 10 years
  • SEBC, EWS, SC and ST men of Gujarat origin: 5 years
  • SEBC, EWS, SC and ST women of Gujarat origin: 10 years (includes 5 years as women)
  • Unreserved women: 5 years
  • Candidates with disabilities: up to 10 years
  • Relaxed upper age cannot go beyond 45; serving government employees get no relaxation

Qualification

A bachelor's degree from a university set up by an Act of Parliament or a State Legislature, a deemed university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the government. Final-year students can take the prelim but must hold the degree by the last date of the main exam application.

Other conditions

  • Age relaxation for SEBC, EWS, SC and ST candidates applies only to candidates of Gujarat origin.

What they ask

The GPSC prelim is one General Studies paper of 200 questions in 180 minutes, set at degree level, and the exam rules bar calculators. A large part of the syllabus is Gujarat-specific: dynasties, literature, theatre, fairs and festivals, tribal life, museums and the state's economy all appear by name. Prelim marks only decide who reaches the main exam. In the main exam the Gujarati and English papers need 25% each, and your rank comes from the essay, four General Studies papers and the 150-mark interview.

How to prepare

  • Treat Gujarat as its own subject. Keep separate notes on Gujarat's dynasties, literature, theatre, tribal festivals, museums and economy, since the official syllabus lists each of them.
  • Practise reasoning and data interpretation without a calculator, because calculators are not allowed in the prelim.
  • Solve the prelim papers with answers from GPSC's question paper section to see how questions on schemes and current events are framed.
  • Start answer writing for the main exam early. The essay and four General Studies papers carry 1,250 marks, and scoring under 25% in either language paper keeps your other papers from counting.

  4. Confirm the application and pay the fee if your category has to
  5. Submit the consent form and consent deposit when GPSC opens them before the prelim
