About TGPSC Group 1
Group-I is the highest-level exam the Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC, earlier TSPSC) runs for state services. It fills senior posts such as Deputy Collector, DSP, Commercial Tax Officer and Mandal Parishad Development Officer. The latest notification, No. 02/2024 dated 19 February 2024, listed 563 vacancies, 140 of them for MPDO.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–46 years, counted on 1 July 2024.
Age relaxation
- OBC: 5 years
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- EWS: 5 years
- PwBD: 10 years
- Minimum age is 21 for DSP, Regional Transport Officer and Assistant Excise Superintendent.
- Maximum age is 35 for DSP, Deputy Superintendent of Jails and Assistant Excise Superintendent, and 46 for the rest (raised from 44 by G.O.Ms.No.30 of 8 February 2024).
- Telangana state government employees: up to 5 years based on regular service. Ex-servicemen and NCC instructors: 3 years plus length of service.
Qualification
A bachelor's degree from a university recognised in India, as prescribed in each department's service rules. The result must have been declared by the notification date, 19 February 2024.
Other conditions
- Deputy Superintendent of Jails is a men-only post.
- 95% of posts are reserved for local candidates of each multi-zone under G.O.Ms.No.124 of 2018.

What they ask
The prelims paper has 150 objective questions in two and a half hours on current affairs, geography, Indian history, polity and governance, Telangana society and state policies, and reasoning with data interpretation. It only shortlists: 50 candidates per vacancy in each multi-zone go to Mains, and prelims marks are not used for rank. Mains is descriptive, with six 150-mark papers answered in English, Telugu or Urdu plus a qualifying General English paper at SSC level. Paper VI is entirely about the Telangana movement and state formation, split into three periods from 1948 to 2014.
How to prepare
- Study the Telangana movement in the three periods the syllabus uses (1948-1970, 1971-1990, 1991-2014). Paper VI is built on these blocks, and Telangana history also appears in Paper II and the prelims.
- Prepare Telangana state policies and the Telangana economy alongside the national topics; both are named in the prelims list and Mains Paper IV.
- Pick one medium for Mains and stay with it. Writing part of a paper in English and part in Telugu or Urdu is not allowed.
- Do not skip General English. It is Class 10 standard, but you still need 40% (OC/EWS), 35% (BC) or 30% (SC/ST/PH) to qualify.
