About India Post GDS
The Department of Posts engages Gramin Dak Sevaks to run branch post offices and to support sub and head post offices, mostly in rural areas. GDS are engaged under the Gramin Dak Sevaks (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020 and are not regular central government employees. The latest schedule on the GDS portal, Schedule-I of January 2025, took applications from 10 February to 3 March 2025. Pay is a Time Related Continuity Allowance: Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 for a BPM and Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470 for an ABPM or Dak Sevak at the start.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–40 years, counted on Last date of application (3 March 2025 in Schedule-I, January 2025).
Age relaxation
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- OBC: 3 years
- PwBD: 10 years
- EWS applicants get no age relaxation.
- Persons with disabilities get 10 years, rising to 13 years for PwD + OBC and 15 years for PwD + SC/ST.

Other conditions
- The notification also asks for knowledge of computer, knowledge of cycling and adequate means of livelihood.
- A BPM must arrange accommodation for the branch post office and live in the post village. ABPMs and Dak Sevaks must live within the delivery area of their office.
- You can apply for one or more posts, but all of them must be in one division.
- For posts in Arunachal Pradesh there is a special rule: English or Hindi up to Class 10 plus one of the notified tribal languages, proved by a certificate from the Deputy Commissioner or an authorised officer.

What they ask
There is no question paper for GDS. The Department of Posts ranks applicants for each post by their Class 10 marks, calculated to four decimal places. If your marksheet shows only grades, the system converts them by multiplying the grade points by 9.5, and a CGPA is converted the same way. Your chance depends on your Class 10 percentage compared with other applicants for the same post in your category, and on the division you choose.
How to prepare
- Fill in marks exactly as printed on your Class 10 marksheet. The notification says an application that gives grades or points where marks are shown is liable to be cancelled.
- Read the post list in Annexure-I before you pay. You may pick several posts, but only inside one division, so choose the division where your category has posts.
- Check the local language prescribed for each post. If you did not study that language up to Class 10, you are not eligible for that post.
- Keep the photograph under 50 KB and the signature under 20 KB, both in JPG. Applications with blurred or unreadable images are rejected.
- Watch the portal and your SMS after each shortlist. If you do not report to the Divisional Head within 15 days, the portal marks you as not turned up and your candidature is cancelled.

How to apply
- Register on indiapostgdsonline.gov.in with a mobile number and email ID, both verified by OTP. Only one registration is allowed per person.
- Pay the Rs 100 fee online if it applies to you. Women, SC/ST, PwD and transwomen applicants are exempt.
- Select one division, then choose the posts and give your order of preference.
- Upload your photograph and signature and submit. A three-day edit window opens after the closing date.
