About Coal India MT
Coal India Limited, a Maharatna company under the Ministry of Coal, hires Management Trainees in the E-1 grade and places them in its subsidiary companies. The starting basic pay is Rs 60,000 in the Rs 60,000 to Rs 1,80,000 scale, and trainees are confirmed after one year of training and probation. Advertisement No. 03/2026 (CBT-26) listed 660 tentative vacancies in nine disciplines, most of them in engineering, and the application window closed on 21 June 2026 after one extension. The computer-based test was held on 24 August 2026, and there is no interview in this recruitment.

General category: Up to 30 years, counted on 30 April 2026 (Advertisement No. 03/2026).
Age relaxation
- OBC: 3 years
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- PwBD: 10 years
- PwBD: 10 years for General (UR), 13 for OBC (NCL) and 15 for SC/ST.
- Ex-servicemen, dependants of 1984 riot victims and DODPKIA candidates get relaxation under Government of India and DoPT rules.
- Even after relaxation, age must not exceed 56 on 30 April 2026.
- There is no age bar for employees of CIL and its subsidiaries.

Other conditions
- Final-year students of 2025-26 could apply if they expected results by 31 August 2026. CIL's notice of 21 September 2026 asks them to upload final marksheets between 24 September and 8 October 2026.
- Selected trainees sign a service agreement bond of Rs 3 lakh to serve the company for at least 60 months; Rs 5,000 a month is held from pay towards it and refunded after 60 months.
- Application fee: Rs 1,180 (Rs 1,000 plus Rs 180 GST) for General, OBC and EWS candidates. SC, ST, PwBD candidates and CIL employees are exempt.

- Awareness about the coal sector in India, climate change and the SDGs
- Logical reasoning: series, coding-decoding, syllogism, blood relations, seating arrangement, data analysis
- Quantitative aptitude: number system, percentage, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, mensuration, probability, statistics
- English: synonyms, antonyms and other language questions

What they ask
You answer 200 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours: 100 in Paper I and 100 in Paper II, each worth one mark. Wrong answers are not penalised, and unanswered questions simply score zero. Paper I mixes general awareness, reasoning, arithmetic and English, and its syllabus includes the coal sector, the Union Budget and flagship government schemes. Paper II is built on the core subjects of your own discipline. Questions come in English and Hindi, and the English version is final if the two differ.
How to prepare
- Attempt every question. The advertisement says there is no penalty for a wrong answer.
- Do not neglect Paper I. You need the minimum marks in each paper separately, so strong subject knowledge cannot make up for a weak Paper I.
- Add the coal sector in India, the Union Budget, flagship government schemes, and climate change and the SDGs to your general awareness notes. The Paper I syllabus names each of them.
- Plan for speed: 200 questions in 180 minutes leaves less than a minute each, so take full-length timed mocks before the exam.

How to apply

- Choose three test cities in order of preference; they cannot be changed after submission.
- Give three choices of subsidiary for posting.
- Pay the fee online unless you are exempt, and attach an NOC if you work in government, a PSU or an autonomous body.
