About AAI JE through GATE

Several public sector employers hire engineers on GATE scores instead of holding their own written test, and AAI is one of them. Advertisement No. 09/2025/CHQ listed 976 Junior Executive posts in five disciplines and accepted GATE 2023, 2024 or 2025 scores with equal weight. The post is in the E-1 scale of Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,40,000, with a cost to company of about Rs 13 lakh a year. GATE itself is conducted by the IITs and IISc, not by AAI.

Eligibility

Age limit

General category: Up to 27 years, counted on 27 September 2025 (Advertisement No. 09/2025/CHQ).

Age relaxation

• SC: 5 years
• ST: 5 years
• OBC: 3 years
• PwBD: 10 years
• Ex-servicemen: 5 years
• Ex-servicemen and commissioned officers with at least five years of military service get up to 5 years.
• Regular AAI employees who have completed probation get up to 10 years.

Qualification

Architecture: bachelor's degree in Architecture and registration with the Council of Architecture (GATE paper AR). Civil: B.E./B.Tech in Civil (GATE CE). Electrical: B.E./B.Tech in Electrical (GATE EE). Electronics: B.E./B.Tech in Electronics, Telecommunications, or Electrical with specialisation in Electronics (GATE EC). Information Technology: B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT or Electronics, or MCA (GATE CS).

Other conditions

• You need a qualifying score in the GATE paper linked to your post, from GATE 2023, 2024 or 2025.
• Colour blindness or night blindness is a ground for rejection.
• Application fee is Rs 300. SC, ST, PwBD and women candidates, and apprentices who completed one year of training in AAI, are exempt.

Selection process

1. Apply on the AAI website with your GATE registration number
2. Shortlisting for application verification on the basis of GATE score (2023, 2024 or 2025, given equal weight)
3. Merit list on GATE score; ties go to the older candidate, then to higher marks in the qualifying degree
4. Provisional selection subject to document checks and medical fitness

What they ask

AAI sets no paper of its own for these posts; your GATE score is the merit. Each GATE paper is 100 marks in three hours, with multiple choice, multiple select and numerical answer questions worth 1 or 2 marks. Only multiple choice questions carry negative marks, and there is no partial credit on multiple select questions. For the CE, CS, EC and EE papers, 72 marks come from the subject, 13 from engineering mathematics and 15 from general aptitude.

How to prepare

• Treat GATE as the whole selection. AAI ranks you only on the GATE score of the paper linked to your post.
• Numerical answer and multiple select questions carry no negative marks, so attempt all of them even when unsure.
• Do not skip general aptitude and engineering mathematics. Together they are 28 of 100 marks in the CE, CS, EC and EE papers.
• Check the age cut-off along with the score. For Advertisement No. 09/2025 you had to be 27 or younger on 27 September 2025, even with a valid older GATE score.
• Get your colour and night vision checked early. Either kind of blindness was a ground for rejection in this advertisement.

3. Pay Rs 300 online unless you are in an exempt category.
