About SSC JHT
This exam, still widely searched as SSC JHT, recruits Hindi translators for central ministries, departments and organisations. All the posts are Group B non-gazetted. You need a master's degree with both Hindi and English studied at degree level, and the exam tests translation between the two languages.
Eligibility
Age limit
General category: 18–30 years, counted on 1 August 2026.
Age relaxation
- OBC: 3 years
- SC: 5 years
- ST: 5 years
- PwBD: 10 years
- PwBD candidates get 10 years (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST).
- Ex-servicemen get 3 years after deducting their military service from their actual age.

What they ask
Paper-I has 100 questions on General Hindi and 100 on General English, each part on a one-hour timer, with 0.25 mark cut per wrong answer. The questions are at degree level and test usage, idioms, grammar and literature in both languages. Paper-II is written: you translate one passage each way between Hindi and English and write one essay in each language. Paper-II counts in full for the final merit, while Paper-I counts at half weight.
How to prepare
- Translate a short official or news passage both ways every day, and keep a list of standard administrative terms in Hindi and English.
- Give descriptive writing as much time as MCQ practice, since Paper-II counts in full for merit and Paper-I only at half weight.
- Write timed practice papers: Paper-II fits two translations and two essays into 2 hours.
- Revise Hindi and English grammar, idioms and literature at degree level for Paper-I.
