What they ask
The prelims has 100 questions in 60 minutes, in three sections with their own 20-minute clocks, and you must clear each section and the overall cut-off. Generalists then take 200 objective questions for 250 marks in 150 minutes, with General Awareness focused on the financial sector, followed at once by a typed letter and essay worth 30 marks. Hindi Officers take a 200-mark objective mains in which Professional Knowledge (grammar, the official language Act and Rules, and translation) carries 100 marks, then a 60-minute descriptive paper with two essays, a Hindi letter and two translations. For Hindi typing you need the Inscript or Remington (GAIL) keyboard layout. Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge can be taken in English or Hindi, and each wrong objective answer costs a quarter of that question's marks. Prelims marks do not count in the final merit list; Generalists only need to qualify in the descriptive test, while Hindi Officers' descriptive marks are counted.
How to prepare
- Practise English, reasoning and quantitative aptitude in 20-minute timed blocks. Each prelims section has its own clock and its own cut-off.
- Generalists: follow insurance and financial sector news for General Awareness, which carries 60 marks in the mains.
- Generalists: practise typing a letter and an essay in 30 minutes. You must clear the descriptive test to reach the interview, even though its marks are not added to the merit list.
- Hindi Officers: practise Hindi typing in Inscript or Remington (GAIL) and timed translation both ways. Professional Knowledge alone is 100 of the 200 objective marks.
- Build speed on reasoning and quantitative aptitude with daily topic-wise quizzes on the free Improvam app.
