What they ask

Phase I is a screening round: Paper 1 tests general ability in 60 minutes, while Paper 2 tests your stream subject in just 40 minutes, so speed on commerce and finance matters. Phase I marks only decide who moves on. Phase II is what counts, with an online English descriptive paper and a longer stream paper that carries two-thirds of the weight. You need 50% aggregate in Phase II, and about three candidates per vacancy are called for interview.

How to prepare

  • Build the General stream syllabus around the annexure headings: accounting standards, costing methods, the named Companies Act chapters and macroeconomics come up in both phases.
  • Practise drafting short formal pieces against the clock for the Phase II English paper, since it tests drafting skills and carries one-third of the Phase II weight.
  • Keep Paper 1 above the 30% cut-off without over-investing; Phase I marks are not used in the final merit.
  • Follow SEBI circulars, market regulators and recent financial sector changes for the general awareness and finance questions.
  • Revise commerce and economics basics through daily topic-wise practice quizzes on the free Improvam app.
