About IRDAI Assistant Manager
IRDAI, the insurance regulator, recruits Assistant Managers through an all-India open competition. The latest notification on its vacancies page, from August 2024, was for 49 posts: 24 Generalist and 5 each in the Actuarial, Finance, Law, IT and Research streams. The written stage has a descriptive round, unlike most bank exams.

- You had to be born between 21 September 1994 and 20 September 2003, both dates included.
- PwBD relaxation is 10 years for General, 13 for OBC and 15 for SC/ST.
- Relaxations cannot be combined.

What they ask
Phase I has 160 questions across four tests in a composite 90 minutes, and it only decides who writes Phase II. You must clear each test and the aggregate. Phase II has three descriptive papers of 100 marks each, 60 minutes per paper, and the interview shortlist uses these marks alone. Paper II and Paper III are about insurance economics, insurance principles and management, so general bank exam preparation will not cover them.
How to prepare
- Start Paper III early. Insurance principles, insurance lines and management theory are specific to this exam.
- Link current economic news to insurance for Paper II, which asks about growth, financial markets and insurance regulation.
- Practise handwritten essays and précis at speed, since each Phase II paper allows only 60 minutes.
- Treat Phase I as a filter: clear all four tests, then give most of your time to the descriptive papers.
