If you finish a dictation but cannot read your own outlines afterwards, the passage is not yet exam-ready. Practise the complete task, including transcription.
The Stenographer 2026 notice gives the CBT 50 Reasoning, 50 General Awareness and 100 English questions. The ordinary sectional timings are 30, 30 and 60 minutes, with 0.25 negative marking. Official Stenographer 2026 notice, paragraph 13.
Keep the CBT and skill records separate
A high objective-test score cannot tell you whether your shorthand is accurate. Use one practice record for the CBT and another for dictation plus transcription.
For the CBT, record errors by subject and cause. English may need a different review routine from General Awareness. When you miss a grammar question, explain the rule using a fresh sentence. When you miss a fact, revise its context rather than memorising only the option letter.
Match the sectional timers in your mock. A freely shared two-hour clock can hide a slow Reasoning section or give English time that the stated format does not provide.
Know the exact skill task
The notice specifies 10-minute dictation at 100 wpm for Grade C and 80 wpm for Grade D. Ordinary transcription times are 40/55 minutes for Grade C English/Hindi and 50/65 for Grade D English/Hindi. Eligible candidates have separate compensatory-time provisions. Official skill-test scheme, paragraph 15.
Use the row for your grade and chosen language. A typing exercise alone does not reproduce listening, taking shorthand and transcribing it.
Diagnose where the passage breaks
After transcription, compare the output with the original passage. Was a missing word never captured during dictation, or was its outline captured but misread? Those mistakes need different practice.
If you miss the outline at speed, slow down enough to learn it correctly before building pace. If you misread your own notes, review the ambiguous forms and spacing. Repeating a fast dictation without examining the transcript can repeat the same weakness for weeks.
Bring in unfamiliar passages. With a familiar recording, memory can quietly fill the gaps in your shorthand. Keep a few transcripts so you can see whether omissions and substitutions are reducing over time.
Do not build the plan around a rumoured result
Watch for the official stage notice and the next required action. Application announcements, CBT schedules and skill-test instructions are separate documents. A calendar estimate is not an individual appointment.
