An essay-only writing routine leaves a gap in SBI PO mains preparation. The current descriptive paper tests shorter workplace communication tasks, so practise those tasks directly.
Verified 20 September 2026, CRPD/PO/2026-27/09: the 30-minute descriptive test has three tasks for 30 marks: email, situation analysis, and a choice between report writing and precis writing. It follows the objective paper and answers are typed. Check the official 2026 mains information handout.
Write an email that lets someone act
Use a fictional practice prompt: a customer says a requested document has not arrived. Draft a response that acknowledges the problem, states what needs checking and explains the next step. Keep the subject line specific.
Do not invent a guaranteed resolution time, an account detail or a policy. If the prompt supplies a deadline, use it. If it does not, describe a reasonable next action without manufacturing authority.
After writing, ask whether the recipient can tell what the email is about and what to do next. Remove sentences such as “I hope this email finds you in the best of health” when they consume space without helping the task.
Situation analysis needs a decision
Suppose a fictional branch faces a queue after a system interruption. List the immediate problem, the information you need and the action you would take. Explain why that action is appropriate.
Avoid solving every possible banking problem in the same response. Stay inside the facts of the prompt. A short answer that identifies the affected customers and a sensible order of work is stronger practice than a long paragraph full of management vocabulary.
Review whether you have distinguished confirmed facts from assumptions. If your response depends on the system being restored within ten minutes, but the prompt never says that, revise it.
Report and precis are different jobs
A practice report should organise information so another person can understand what happened. Use a clear purpose, relevant observations and a conclusion supported by those observations. Do not add invented survey results to make the report look formal.
A precis condenses the source passage. Retain its central meaning and remove repetition and secondary detail. Your opinion does not belong in the summary unless the task specifically requests it. Compare the finished precis with the original: have you changed the author's position or dropped a necessary qualification?
Use the word limits in the actual prompt. A model answer's length is not an instruction for your examination.
Train on a keyboard
Complete practice with a timer and without automatic rewriting assistance. Spend a little time planning before typing, then leave space to reread. Find a workable division across the three tasks through repeated practice rather than assuming every answer needs the same number of minutes.
Track recurring errors: unfinished sentences, vague subject lines, incorrect references or an answer that misses the request. Repair one pattern in the next drill. You do not need elaborate vocabulary to write accurately.
For the other side of the examination, use the SBI prelims timing guide to review your test habits. When you reach the next selection stage, the psychometric and interview guide gives a practical preparation route. Keep the current official handout with your mock schedule so outdated formats do not quietly return.
