RRB JE CBT 1 and CBT 2 reward different preparation. The first stage screens candidates through general subjects. The second gives most questions to technical ability, so engineering revision cannot wait until a shortlist arrives.
This guide follows CEN 04/2026 for Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent, checked on 20 September 2026. It should not be confused with CEN 05/2025, which has its own applications and results.
What each CBT contains
CBT 1 has 100 questions in 90 minutes. Its indicative split is Mathematics 30, Reasoning 25, General Awareness 15, and General Science 30. CBT 2 has 150 questions in 120 minutes: Technical Abilities 100, General Awareness 15, Physics and Chemistry 15, Computers 10, and Environment/Pollution Control 10. Eligible scribe users receive the notified additional time.
Both CBTs have one-third negative marking. The second stage provides a virtual calculator. These details are in paragraph 13 of the official JE/DMS CEN 04/2026.
Match your qualification to the exam group
Read the post parameters and technical exam-group mapping before selecting a syllabus. The group is tied to the notice's qualification rules. A familiar branch name on a coaching course is not enough to confirm that it matches your application.
Print or save the relevant syllabus pages, then mark each topic as comfortable, partly revised, or not yet attempted. Keep the labels honest. Having watched a lecture once should not automatically mean “comfortable”. A short set of unfamiliar questions is a better check.
Begin with topics that support several later chapters. For a numerical subject, work through the method with units and assumptions visible. Then attempt a timed version. If the method is sound but slow, practise retrieval and calculation; if the method is wrong, speed is not yet the problem.
Keep the non-technical marks in view
It is reasonable to give technical revision substantial time, but a full CBT 2 mock should still include the other areas. Small sections are easy to postpone and can become a recurring source of avoidable errors.
For computer basics or environmental topics, keep notes tied to the listed syllabus. Do not turn a small section into an open-ended reading project. Use a question to identify a gap, read enough to resolve it, and recheck the concept later.
Use the virtual-calculator practice available through the official exam familiarisation route when provided. Knowing a calculation on your usual phone app does not mean you are comfortable with the examination interface.
Keep one review sheet per stage
For CBT 1, record overall accuracy, question selection, and weak general subjects. For CBT 2, separate technical errors by chapter and keep a short list of non-technical gaps. This prevents a good screening score from hiding an unfinished technical syllabus.
After each full mock, choose one correction for the next attempt. For example, reduce time lost on a particular numerical type or stop a recurring unit-conversion mistake. Make the next change small enough to check in one mock.
Dates, documents and official results
Read current notices on the unified RRB portal under your board and CEN 04/2026. Application dates and tentative test schedules can be amended, so this article does not invent a CBT date or present an old cycle's result as new.
The official migration notice explains why new updates belong on that portal. When a shortlist appears, read its document-verification and medical instructions in full. Compare your educational records and post preferences with the notice before reporting.
