Engineering Services Examination: how the three stages count

Read the verified UPSC Engineering Services 2027 dates, understand Prelims, Mains and interview marks, and build a practical branch-specific preparation plan.

Engineering Services Prelims marks contribute to final merit. If you have also read about Civil Services, do not carry its screening-only Prelims rule into ESE.

This guide uses the Engineering Services Examination 2027 notice published on 16 September 2026. Sources were checked on 20 September 2026.

The published 2027 dates

The notice gives 6 October 2026 as the last application date, 31 January 2027 for the Preliminary Examination, and 18 June 2027 for the Main Examination. Confirm the closing time and later changes on the official ESE 2027 notification page before acting. These are published dates, not estimates from last year's calendar.

How the marks accumulate

Stage I has two objective papers: General Studies and Engineering Aptitude for 200 marks, and a discipline paper for 300. Stage II has two conventional discipline papers, 300 marks each. Stage III is a 200-mark Personality Test. Marks across the stages determine merit under the qualifying rules, making the maximum 1,300. The discipline choices and detailed scheme are in the official ESE 2027 notice.

Your engineering branch therefore needs two kinds of preparation: selecting an answer accurately and presenting a worked solution clearly. One does not replace the other.

Revise a topic through both formats

Choose a topic from your discipline syllabus and solve a small objective set. Then attempt a conventional problem on the same concept. In the objective review, check the calculation and the assumptions that ruled out other options. In the conventional review, check the sequence of steps, units, diagrams, and the point where your reasoning became unclear.

This makes revision more specific. If you know the concept but cannot finish a numerical problem within time, more lecture hours may not be the best next step. If the method itself is wrong, speed practice only rehearses the mistake.

Keep a short formula sheet that includes conditions of use. A formula copied without its assumptions can produce a confident wrong answer. Add one example of a situation where it does not apply; that gives the note a purpose beyond memorisation.

Give Paper I a defined share of the week

A branch-heavy timetable can leave General Studies and Engineering Aptitude untouched until the end. Start with the official syllabus, mark familiar areas, and use a timed diagnostic to find the gaps. Do not assume that a general current-affairs course covers every engineering-aptitude demand.

For practice material, use the UPSC previous-question-paper collection and select the right branch and stage. Label saved papers clearly. An ESE conventional paper and an engineering optional paper from Civil Services belong to different examination schemes.

Check qualifications and follow the correct result

Before applying, compare your degree and other eligibility details with the notice's exact provisions. Also review the services and medical requirements relevant to your preferences. Avoid choosing preferences purely from a familiar service name without understanding its conditions.

Use UPSC written results for stage results and UPSC final results for recommendations. Select the examination year as well as the stage. The 2027 notice does not make a 2026 interview or result notice applicable to your application.

You can compare the railway engineering route in the RRB JE paper guide. The exam guides directory keeps the different engineering and central-exam routes together.
