RBI Grade B General asks you to do two different kinds of work: answer a broad objective paper and write reasoned answers about economic and financial topics. Build both skills before a prelims result forces the change.
Verified 20 September 2026, panel year 2026: Phase I has 200 marks in 120 minutes across awareness, English, quant and reasoning. Phase II totals 300 marks: Economic and Social Issues, English writing, and General Finance and Management, 100 each. ESI and Finance/Management combine objective and typed descriptive work; English is typed descriptive. See RBI's official Appendix II.
This is the General cadre. DEPR and DSIM have separate schemes and should not use this as their paper plan.
Study one concept in two ways
Take an economic concept such as inflation. First explain its meaning without copying a definition. Then practise objective questions that distinguish the concept from similar terms. Finally, write a short answer explaining one cause and one possible consequence.
That sequence connects recall with explanation. If you can choose the correct option but cannot explain why it is correct, your understanding may be narrower than the score suggests.
Use current developments as examples only after checking them. A precise, relevant example helps an answer; an incorrect statistic weakens it. Keep the source and date beside any fact you plan to use later.
Read reports with a question in mind
Before opening a long publication, choose what you are trying to understand. It might be a change in household saving, financial access or a banking risk. Read the relevant section, record the main finding and explain the connection to the syllabus topic.
Do not copy pages of tables into notes just because the publication is official. Select information you can explain and revise. Mark whether a number is a rate, share, stock or flow; confusing those categories can spoil an otherwise sensible answer.
After reading, write a possible examination question and answer it briefly without looking. The exercise reveals whether you understood the material or merely recognised familiar words.
Practise typed answers early
Use a plain editor for practice and turn off automatic rewriting assistance. Plan the answer, type it and leave a little time to reread. Review relevance before vocabulary. A clear explanation with a limited scope is better practice than a fluent answer to a different question.
For a longer response, give each paragraph a job. One can explain the issue; another can develop the reasoning or evidence. Stop when the question has been answered instead of attaching a generic conclusion about national development.
Mix these sessions with objective practice under the correct timers. Neither skill substitutes for the other.
Keep the cycle clear
The 2026 recruitment notice identifies the panel year and cadre. Use the subsequent official call letters and notices for individual arrangements. This article does not convert 2026 dates into a predicted 2027 calendar.
For a different RBI route, read the Assistant language-test guide. For another development-focused examination, compare the NABARD Grade A phase guide. Start by matching the syllabus and selection scheme, then decide how much preparation can sensibly overlap.
