For CMS 2026, follow the written-examination instructions in the official notice. Older descriptions calling CMS a computer-based test can send you into the wrong style of exam-day practice.
The Combined Medical Services Examination 2026 notification describes two written objective papers. Its candidate instructions specify a black ball-point pen and an answer sheet. This guide was checked on 20 September 2026 against the official CMS 2026 notice.
Papers and marks
Each written paper carries 250 marks and normally lasts two hours. Paper I has 120 questions: 96 in General Medicine and 24 in Paediatrics. Paper II has 120 questions across Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Preventive and Social Medicine, with 40 from each part. The Personality Test carries 100 marks after the 500-mark written stage. Check the syllabus and incorrect-answer penalty in Appendix I of the same notice.
These weights give you a starting point for a revision plan. They do not tell you which individual topics will appear or make a particular score safe.
Turn clinical reading into exam practice
Build your first revision list from the syllabus headings. Under each, note what you can already answer reliably and what you repeatedly confuse. Use the errors to choose the next session. Reading an entire textbook chapter again is often unnecessary when the problem is one distinction between closely related options.
For a practice question, write a brief reason for the answer and a reason for rejecting the strongest alternative. This is especially useful when you recognise the topic but choose between two plausible responses. Keep the explanation short enough to review later; a second textbook disguised as an error notebook will be hard to maintain.
Use timed mixed-subject sets once the basics are covered. A chapter-wise set tells you the topic before you read the question. A mixed set checks whether you can identify it yourself and move between subjects without losing time.
Practise the answer-sheet routine too. During a full mock, include marking responses and checking question numbers within the allotted time. Finishing the questions on paper is not the same as completing the response sheet accurately.
Prepare documents before the interview notice
Read the qualification and internship provisions for the specific cycle and posts. Do not assume that being permitted to sit the examination establishes that you can join immediately. List the documents you hold, those still being issued, and the authority responsible for each one.
For Personality Test preparation, be able to explain your educational background and choices clearly. If you mention an experience, keep it accurate and specific. Practise giving a structured explanation without claiming certainty where you do not have it. That is more useful than memorising grand answers about public service.
The verified 2026 position
The CMS 2026 examination page provides the written-result and name-list documents uploaded on 1 September 2026, followed by an application-updation notice on 8 September. Read the later notice with the result. A written qualification is not the final recommendation.
Use the examination page for the current stage and UPSC final results for any final list. Match the year and your roll number before following instructions. This guide does not invent a Personality Test date or a final-result release date.
