The three stages

Prelims marks don't carry forward; Mains + Interview decide rank. But Prelims eliminates more candidates than the other two stages combined, so year one is, practically, a Prelims campaign with Mains foundations.
Eligibility in brief
- Age: 21–32 on 1 August of the exam year for General; relaxations of +3 years (OBC) and +5 (SC/ST), and others per notification.
- Attempts: 6 for General, 9 for OBC, unlimited within age for SC/ST.
- Education: any bachelor's degree, any discipline, any marks. Final-year students may attempt Prelims.
Prelims pattern (the year-one battlefield)
GS-I — 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours, one-third negative marking. Ranking paper. Subject spread (recent-years typical): Polity 12–18, Economy 13–17, Environment 10–18, History & Culture 12–16, Geography 10–14, S&T 7–12, with current affairs woven through everything.
CSAT — 80 questions, qualifying at 66.67/200. Genuinely harder since 2023; budget real practice or it will end your attempt while you're busy mastering Polity. Full breakdown on the CSAT pillar page.

The 12-month skeleton (Prelims-first, Mains-aware)
Months 1–4 — Foundations. NCERTs (6–12) for History, Geography, Economy, Science; then one standard book per subject (Polity: Laxmikanth; Economy: a current standard; Modern History: Spectrum). Start the daily current-affairs habit on day one — the 18-month window for Prelims 2027 is already running. Write nothing for Mains yet except a weekly answer for practice.
Months 5–8 — Consolidation. Second reading with topic-wise PYQs after every chapter. Environment & ecology gets dedicated treatment (highest-variance subject, heavily current-linked). CSAT diagnostic in month 5; weekly CSAT practice if you scored under 120.
Months 9–11 — Prelims mode. Full PYQ papers under exam conditions (protocol here), then a mock series. Revision now beats new material at 10:1 — the exam rewards the 4th pass over the 400th new page. Current-affairs monthly consolidations throughout.
Month 12 — Taper. Short daily quizzes to stay sharp, error-log revision, two dress rehearsals, sleep like it's training (it is).
Three cross-cutting rules: (1) daily MCQ retrieval from month one — reading without testing is the classic first-attempt failure; (2) one source per subject, revised repeatedly, beats three sources read once; (3) protect a minimum daily floor on bad days — the streak method is the operating system this plan runs on.
Costs, honestly
The exam itself is nearly free (₹100 Prelims fee, exemptions for many categories). Preparation costs are where budgets explode — and mostly needn't: NCERTs are free PDFs, standard books are a few thousand rupees total, and the daily practice layer (quizzes, PYQs, current affairs) is free on Improvam. Reserve real spending for a Mains test series with human evaluation in year two of the pipeline — that's where paid feedback earns its price.

Is one year enough for UPSC CSE 2027? For Prelims + a serious Mains attempt, 12–15 focused months is the standard successful timeline. "Focused" is doing the work daily — not hours owned by a coaching timetable.
Do I need coaching? Need, no. Coaching buys structure and deadlines; every piece of content is available independently. Self-study + a disciplined daily system + a Mains test series is a proven route.
Which optional subject should I pick? Defer it to month 4–5. Choose by syllabus overlap with GS, availability of guidance, and honest interest after reading each shortlisted syllabus — not by last year's topper list.
