How far back should current affairs go for Prelims?

About 18 months before the exam date. Schemes, reports, treaties, environment summits and awards from this window appear repeatedly. A daily digest habit makes this window feel small.

Are PYQs really that important?

Yes — the fastest way to internalise UPSC's question style. Statement-based framing, option-trap patterns and topic weightage all repeat. Solving 2021–2024 papers under timed conditions is standard advice from every recent topper.

Weightage shifts year to year, but the 2021–2024 papers show a stable pattern — with current affairs woven through every subject rather than confined to its own section:

The three skills the paper actually tests

1. Elimination under uncertainty

Most Prelims questions are statement-combination format — 'which of the above are correct?'. You rarely know every statement; you clear the paper by confidently eliminating wrong ones. This is a trained skill, built by doing hundreds of statement-based MCQs with explanations.

2. Current-affairs recall

A quarter of the paper draws on the previous 18 months of news. Reading isn't retention — testing is. Convert every day's news into answered MCQs and the current-affairs section becomes your most reliable marks.

3. Time-pressure composure

7.2 minutes per 6 questions, for 120 minutes. Timed daily practice at 45 seconds per question makes real exam pacing feel spacious rather than panicked.
