Answer: 5/8 metre. Express both lengths in eighths: 3/4 = 6/8. Subtract 1/8 to get 5/8 metre. Subtracting numerators and denominators separately does not preserve the size of the fractions.

Name the mathematical meaning

For place value, distinguish the written digit from the quantity it represents. For fractions, use equal-sized parts before subtracting.

Draw the ribbon, arrange counters in equal groups or sketch the garden boundary. Use the representation to check why the operation matches the problem.
